We have adopted our Urban Forest Strategy now in the process of updating our Tree Protection Bylaw. Our urban tree coverage in Saanich is a highly valued asset, but not one that everybody recognizes. We need to make sure that we put better protections in place so that we stop losing trees through servicing and development. Trees Matter!

One action is we need to look at how we create a Boulevard Tree Strategy in areas where we are encouraging walkability. We need to invest in more trees and continue working with community residents to boost the tree plantings in their yards and neighbourhoods.

Urban forests play an important role in contributing to the environmental integrity and climate change resiliency of Saanich – they reduce our carbon footprint by removing carbon from the atmosphere, they filter air and water, protect our watersheds, create shade, provide habitat, and mitigate the effects of wind and storm water.  What could be better!

Urban forests contribute to the social well-being of Saanich by providing healthy and enjoyable recreation opportunities, moderating local climate, shading homes, and businesses to conserve energy, and are critical to mitigate the urban heat island effect. Urban forests contribute to the economic vibrancy of Saanich through increased property values and encouraging business on tree-lined streets.

Protecting Threatened Species

One of the additional benefits that comes with strategies to enhance our urban tree cover is the opportunity to help protect species at risk, such as Garry Oaks.

We are so privileged in this part of the world to have such a diversity of species, including many that are unique to this area. But with that, also comes a responsibility to ensure their well-being. Garry Oaks, for example have a very limited range, and today are found in only about 5% of the territory they once occupied. By focusing on the protection and enhancement of these areas - in places such as Knockan Hill, Christmas Hill and the Alumni Garry Oak Meadow at UVic - we can both help protect the species as well as reaping all of the other benefits of greater tree cover.
